Suggested Implementation Timeline • 2011 - 2012 Grades K-2 • 2012 - 2013 Grades 3-8 • 2013 - 2014 Grades 9-12 • 2014 - 2015 Live Assessments It may help to think of implementation as a multi-year process of weaving the Common Core State Standards into the fabric of classroom instruction until the CCSS have replaced the MS Curriculum Frameworks.

CCSS Training Efforts • 45 CCSS grade-band training sessions and webinars have been offered across the state, reaching over 4,800 educators. • Focused webinars are offered in ELA and mathematics each month. • Webinars are archived in iTunes U. • Training Calendar 2013-2015 • Emphasis on Professional Learning Communities • Statewide Educator Surveys

Necessary Instructional Shifts Collectively, the shifts to the CCSS mean teaching and learning need to be organized to have students: • Conduct short, focused projects and longer term in-depth research; • Produce clear and coherent writing, whatever the selected format; • Communicate research findings (speaking and listening skills) and mathematical thinking; • Model quantitative problems with mathematics; • Persevere in solving problems; and • Reason deeply about mathematics and mathematical situations by applying concepts to real world situations while demonstrating higher-level thinking.
PARCC Assessments 2014-2015 • PARCC Assessments: • Five (5) Performance Levels • ELA and Math only • Dynamic Learning Maps Assessments: • Four (4) Performance Levels (tentative) • ELA and Math only • Science and U.S. History • Biology I and Science 5 and 8
Technology Readiness • The Capacity Planning Tool can calculate the number of devices needed to administer the assessments in 5, 10, 15, or 20 days, depending upon district preference. • This tool is not a single source of readiness information. PARCC Assessment Time:Grades 3-11 • The estimated time for a typical student to complete the full battery of PARCC assessments in ELA and Math is 8-10 hours. • Specific session lengths and totals by grade level are available on the PARCC website. • Districts will have two 4-week windows to administer the battery of PARCC assessments. • Refined guidance available after field testing in 2014.

Dynamic Learning Maps • With the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and PARCC assessments, students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities (SCD) who currently participate in the MAAECF will transition to the Common Core Essential Elements (CCEE) and Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessments. • Mississippi is a governing state in the DLM Consortia. • More information regarding DLM assessments can be found at www.dynamiclearningmaps.org.

Proposed Transitional Timeline • These recommendations are the result of two (2) years of discussion with the USDE, PARCC, superintendents, other practitioners, multiple stakeholders, and state elected officials and were generated to ensure that the full and appropriate implementation of internationally benchmarked standards (Common Core State Standards) is a reality for Mississippi’s students. • All data will be published for all years. • The recommendations are not intended to impact current graduation requirements. • Any changes in federal requirements (such as reauthorization of ESEA) are not represented in this proposal and can happen at any time.
