  2. Day 1 Notes

  3. Organizational patterns Definition • The arrangement of ideas, evidence or details in a paragraph or essay Purpose • Helps a reader to understand and remember the information and make sense of new information

  4. Chronological order Description: • information is arranged according to a progression of time • Chron = time Logic = Order Purpose: • answers questions relating to time (when did events take place?) Signal words: • first, second third, before, after. when, later, until, at last, next, following, finally, eventually, ususally has specific dates

  5. Chronological order Example: • School has increased in its difficulty over the years. In the past, kindergarten was carefree; all I had to do was finger paint, crafts, and naptime. During my elementary years, math went from adding and subtracting to multiplication and division. After that came junior high with more advanced math. Finally, high school has been the most difficult-my responsibilities have gone from naptime to chemistry equations. Practice: • Using signal words, explain the best or worst day you’ve had in recent memory

  6. Sequential order Description: • information is arranged in a step-by-step pattern Purpose: • to explain a process Signal words: • during, after, first, last, steps, stages, progression

  7. Sequential order Example: The first step in redesigning your closet is take everything out and sort through it. The second step is to install a closet organizer. The third step is to put items in the closet so that those you wear most often are easy to access. The final step is to stay organized. Put garments back in their appropriate places so that you will be able to find them. Practice: Using signal words, explain how to prepare for a vocabulary test

  8. Chronological vs. Sequential Chronological = occurs at a specific time and setting Examples: • Biography • Autobiography • Narrative nonfiction Sequential = does not have to occur at any specific time; a process Examples: • Recipes • How-to • Directions

  9. Day 2 Notes

  10. Problem and Solution Definition: • a problem is presented and explained • a possible solution is proposed Purpose: • Answer THE QUESTIONS: • What is the problem? • What is the solution? Signal words: • problem, need, difficult, dilemma, challenge, issue, answer, suggest, solve, resolve, improve, if… then, affect, for this reason, therefore, consequently, as a result, since

  11. Problem and Solution Example: For 2.5 million years, the earth’s climate has fluctuated, cycling from ice ages to warmer periods. But, in the last century, the planet’s temperature has risen unusually fast. We can all help to curb this global warming trend. Many cars are now more energy efficient. Cleaner sources of energy are also in development. It is also suggested that florescent light bulbs replace incandescent bulbs. Practice: Using signal words explain a solution to the problem of bullying

  12. Cause and effect Description: • A cause is an event that brings about another event. Why did the event happen? • An effect is something that happens as a result of the first event. What happened from the event? • shows the causes and effects of various conditions Purpose • Tells why something happened. • Tells the results of an event. Signal words: • for this reason, consequently, on that account, hence, because, if…then, since, effect, as a result of, therefore, for this

  13. Cause and effect Example: • It was raining and I missed the bus. Therefore, I got soaked and missed my social studies test Practice: • Using the signal words finish the following statement: For an entire week I was unable to use any electronic devices.

  14. Day 3 Notes

  15. Main Idea & Details Definition • Main Idea: • The most important point that the writer makes in a reading selection • Main idea should be a complete sentence written in your own words • Details: • pieces of information that support, develop, or explain the main idea • Details should be taken directly from the text. Purpose • Describes a topic with descriptive details.

  16. Main Idea and Details What do you get when you cross a robot and an astronaut? A Robonaut! Robonauts are robot helpers designed to work side-by-side with astronauts. Work on the first Robonaut began in 1997, and by 2002 Robonaut B was revealed to the public. Robonaut2 moved four times faster than the first Robonaut. An advanced version of Robonaut 2 was finally tested in outer space in 2011. • Main idea:Robonautsare robot s that assist astronauts. • Practice: Determine the details that support the main idea • Remember, they should be pulled directly from the text!
