Pep BandPercussion Ensemble Requirements: • Student must audition • After school hours only(must attend rehearsals ) • Must be in Concert Band Performance • Games • Pep Rallies • Others
Band Members Responsibility • Each member of the band must be enrolled in a band class at Appling Middle School. • Each student will abide by the rules and bylaws set in the Appling student handbook at all times.
Band Members Responsibility • All correspondence sent home by the band director must be read and signed by the parents and students an returned promptly to the band director. • Punctuality is the responsibility of each student. This means being in place and ready to perform by a certain time. Not taking instruments out and/or preparing to perform.
After School Rehearsals Their will be after school rehearsals held for the benefit of the students. Students attending these rehearsals will learn special techniques for their assigned instruments, and prepare themselves for performances. An after school rehearsal sheet will be sent out with all the dates and times of rehearsal more than one week in advance. Student will be required to attend some special rehearsals.
Classroom Rules 1 be on time and prepared with all necessary materials. 2 enter and exit silently. 3 follow directions the first time they are given. 4 eating, chewing, and drinking are not allowed in the band room. All contraband will be kept and not returned. 5 not playing of instrument until the director gives you permission.
Classroom Rules 6 students must raise their hands to get permission to speak. 7 store instruments on assigned shelves. 8 keep hands, feet and others objects to yourself. 9 blasting and banging is not permitted. 10 percussion instruments are only for percussionists.
Student Instruments Each student will be responsible for an instrument. Instruments may be purchased or rented from a music store, or loaned from the school. When using a school loaned instrument you must attend all required rehearsals, perform at all required performances, and have all required materials for class. Failure to do so will cost lost of instrument and possible a failing class grade.
Things needed to play in the band. • All students will need the Standard Of Excellence Beginning Book and a cleaning kit for their instrument. • Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, and Bassoon – A person playing one of these instruments will need a box of size 1½ reeds for the instrument in which the student is playing. • Students playing school own saxophones may need to furnish neck strap. • Percussion – each student playing these instruments will need to have a percussion kit. This kit will include snare drum and sticks, bells and mallets.
Types of Instruments in the Band Woodwind: Clarinets, Saxophones, Flutes, Oboe, Bassoon
Types of Instruments in the Band Brass: Trumpet, Cornet, F Horn, Baritone, Trombones, Tubas
Types of Instruments in the Band Percussion: • Drums, Xylophone, Marimba, Bells, Cymbals, Timpani, and others. (percussionist will learn all percussion instruments)
Selection of Instruments Their will be only eight percussionist selected on each grade level. (The first eight to bring their percussion kit). Wind instrumentalist will be selected on instrument availability or if the student owns his/her instrument, and the band needs.
Band Uniform Each student in the band will need to purchase a band shirt and have a pair of black dress pants, black shoes, and black socks. Females may wear black skirts that come below the knees when sitting down with skin tone or black stockings
Class Requirements Each student will have to complete class requirements with no less then an 80% average to move to the next level. These requirements are to assure the student have an opportunity to be successful and to set goals in the sight of the student so they may have some knowledge of what is required to be a musician in high school or on a higher level. Each band class is a year long class.
Beginning Band Requirements After completion of the beginning band class. The student will demonstrate the ability; • to assemble and disassemble their instrument in a quiet and timely manner. • to sight read on assigned instrument, level one music. • to perform level one and two music.
Beginning Band Requirementspage 2 • to perform the B flat, F, E flat, and C concert major scales one octave from memory. • to distinguish between good and bad tone quality. • to use music vocabulary as expected of a student on this level.
Intermediate Band Completion of the beginning band requirements are necessary to enter in the Intermediate band at all grade levels. After completion of the Intermediate Band the student will demonstrate the ability to perform and sight read level three music.
