Project Title: «Development of knowledge-based web services to promote and advance Industrial Symbiosis in Europe eSYMBIOSIS» LIFE 09 ENV/GR/000300 Project objective: The general objective is to produce a web based platform for Industrial Symbiosis communities, offering automation, supporting SMEs, considering regional priorities and enabling the public administrators (municipalities, regional offices) to implement their environmental policy and to monitor environmental and economic consequences. Industrial Symbiosis (IS) is an innovative approach that brings together companies from all business sectors with the aim of improving cross industry resource efficiency through the commercial trading of materials, energy and water and sharing assets, logistics and expertise. This project proposes a systems approach to represent waste streams in reference to their composition, component properties, known and potential usages, commercial and scientific names, and type of post-processing units that may offer upgrades and improve their acceptance to wider range of users. The platform will be designed for Viotia, which is a heavily industrialized region northern to Attica. The service, configured for the profile of Viotia, will involve technologies enabling customization so that it can be easily adjusted to use in other prefectures and municipalities in Greece, UK or any other country.
