Corporate Safety I: ISMS, SOPs, Lock Out / Tag Out & Electrical Safety Bill Hecker, Ron Terry, Larry Baxter ChE 477 UO Lab Discussion 8
Outline • The Safety Pyramid • ISMS • SOPs • Lock Out / Tag Out / Try • Electrical Safety
Safety Pyramid • Tool used to anticipate safety problems • Statistical relationships between levels of safety incidents • Prevention of catastrophies starts with prevention of minor incidents
5-step Safety Management Plan • Five steps to safety management • Define scope of work • Analyze and categorize hazards • Develop and implement hazard controls • Conduct work • Collect feedback and improve process
Standard Operating Procedures • Documents hazards and mitigation strategies • Discusses training and certification requirements • Posted and signed for each major facility
Electrical Safety • Terminology • Electrocution – death from electric shock • Electric shock – non-fatal encounter with electricity • Risk of electrocution varies non-monotonically with current (body resistance ranges from 1 kΩ – 500 kΩ)
Electrical Safety • Circuit breakers protect buildings and equipment. • Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) protect people. • GFCI senses difference between current in hot and neutral lines. • Trips if the difference is > 5 ma. • Required in new construction near water and outdoors.
