The United States spread west across the North American Continent by taking control of these territories (shown Above). They did this because some people believed it was their own right to take these territories for the United States. Sometimes Americans bought land like the Louisiana Purchase and the Gadsden Purchase. Also, they made agreements with other countries which is why we now have, Washington and Oregon, (Oregon Country.) In addition, United States fought in a war to conquer what is now most of California and some of Nevada. Lastly, the U.S.A. won the Mexican-American war and annexed Texas. Can you believe once they got all 6 territories the population grew from 5 million in 1800 to 23 million in 1850? Gaining Land By Jason Fiske
By: Tommy Testa Gold Rush Most people just think there was one gold rush in California. But there really are many other gold and silver rushes. They had them in Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Alaska. So California was not the only state that had a gold rush.
