  1. Welcome back to School! I hope everyone is having a good school year so far! I would like to introduce myself, I am Kimberly Wooster and I am the PTA President at Dingman Delaware Primary School. I have a son named Joshua, who is 7 and in second grade. I have a daughter named Zoey who is 6 1/2 months and my husband's name is James. We have lived in the area for a little more than 3 years. I have always wanted to be a PTA member for my children just like my Mom was for me so when Joshua started at DDPS, I jumped at the opportunity to join. Not only did I become a member, I became the co-chair of Egg Stravaganza. Then I become President-elect in my second year at the school to now being President. It has been an honor to be a part of such a wonderful group. We are looking forward to an eventful school year consisting of the Brain Show, Picture Day, Bus Driver Appreciation breakfast, Sports Day, our annual Food drives, School Mall, Candy Bingo, Movie night and Egg Stravaganza. We are always looking for volunteers from setting up at events, working in concession, baking for an event, no matter if you have an hour or four, we need our volunteers to run an event. I can't believe how many wonderful volunteers we have and how much of their time they give to make our children have a successful school year. Kimberly Wooster President, DDPS PTA Dingman Delaware Primary SchoolPTA News Volume 4, Issue 1 Our PTA Board If you get a chance, thank them! Their volunteer efforts benefit all of our kids at DDPS! 2. Page 2 As always, the fall promises to be a busy one for us. We held our Back to School Open House Night and our Brain Show and have many more events planned for October.   A Note from our Principal Great things continue to happen at DDPS every day. Our students are into a routine and exciting instruction is taking place each day.  The sense of team that is portrayed by our staff is one of the reasons we are able to accomplish great things. We are committed to “Believing in our kids”! We take great pride in providing a warm, nurturing, high standards environment for you and your child. Our success is a result of hard work on the part of our students, our staff and you. Once again, we are asking parents to be involved. This can be done in a variety of ways. Please call the school for a list of ways you can volunteer at school or at home.  To have successful schools, it is important for children to arrive at school in a timely manner.  The Primary school instructional day is from 9:15 until 3:30. It is difficult when children arrive late or are picked up early since there is important information regarding homework and class work that is explained at the end of the day. We would appreciate your assistance in scheduling doctor appointments before and after school if possible. Thank you for working with us to ensure the success for all of our students. We anticipate this year being full of wonderful learning opportunities for our kids and you. October is Safe Schools Month. Continue to check your child’s backpack for events happening in our school. Working together makes a difference. Thank you for sharing your children with us! Kim Butaitis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Did you know? Every Scholastic book order you make benefits the classroom. For every dollar spent, your child’s teacher gets bonus points that are used to purchase books for our kids. A monthly order of $100 (say 10 parents make a $10 order) can get 28 FREE BOOKS for the classroom! Books make great gifts for the kids in your life – buy Scholastic and help our classrooms!

  3. Page 3 • Parent’s Corner • Top 10 Homework Tips • Kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework — it shows kids that what they do is important. • Here are some tips to guide the way: • 1. Know your child’s teacher. Attend • school events to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved. • 2. Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to complete homework. Keep supplies within reach. • 3. Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner. • 4. Help them make a plan. On heavy homework nights or when there's an especially hefty assignment to tackle, encourage your child break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work schedule for the night if necessary and take time for a 15-minute break every hour, if possible. • 5. Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls. (Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful.) • 6. Make sure kids do their own work. They won't learn if they don't think for themselves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggestions and help with directions. But it's a kid's job to do the learning. • 7. Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework, and make yourself available for questions and concerns. • 8. Set a good example. Do your kids ever see you diligently balancing your budget or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice. • 9. Praise their work and efforts. Post an aced test or art project on the refrigerator. Mention academic achievements to relatives. • 10. If there are continuing problems with homework, get • help. Talk about it with your child's teacher. • www.kidshealth.org PTA Calendar of Events October 2012: 19th – Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfast – 9:15 a.m. 20th – Sports Day 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. 23rd – PTA Executive Board Meeting 6:30 p.m./ PTA Meeting 7 p.m. November 2012: 5TH-9TH – Food Drive 5th – School Mall Fundraiser 12th-16th – Food Drive 16th – Picture Retakes December 2012: No PTA Meeting 3rd-7th – Toys for Tots 4th-6th – Lil Shoppers in school January 2012: 11th– Family Fun NightBingo 6:30 p.m. 14th – Book Swap Week in school 14th – PTA Meeting – 5 p.m. February 2013: 8th - Movie Night 6:15 p.m. 25th- March 1st – Seuss Week March 2013: 4th-5th – Book fair Previews 5th-7th – Book fair 4-7 p.m. 23rd – Egg-Stravaganza 10 am-3 pm April 2013: 15th-19th – Pet Food Drive 15th – PTA Executive Board Meeting 6:30 p.m./PTA Meeting (nominations) 7 p.m. 22nd – Science Day/Earth Day May 2013: 6th-10th – Faculty and Staff Appreciation 14th-16th – BOGO 4-7 p.m. 16th – Art Show 6-7:30 p.m. 20th - PTA Executive Board Meeting 6:30 p.m./PTA Meeting (elections) 7 p.m. 22nd-24th – Field Days June 2013: 5th – Volunteer Celebration 10th – 2nd Grade Send Off

  5. Page 5 Recent events… Wow! Not only can you buy great books for the whole family, but the book fair raises money for PTA. We also earn ‘Scholastic dollars’ to purchase books and supplies for the school. Donated baked goods raised $45 for new library books. Thank you bakers!! Don’t miss the next one coming in March. Book Fair The Brain Show A 3-Hour challenge… If you’ve never volunteered before, would you consider committing 3 hours to help out the PTA?
