Emily Bronte, The Author • Emily was born in July 30, 1818 and diedon December 19, 1848 • She lived in Thornton, West riding of Yorkshire, England • the poem Remembrance was written in 1846. • One of her best novels was named Wuthering Heights, and is now considered an English classic • She made-up stories with her siblings, and created tales inspired by toy soldiers. • She is not social because she has no friends outside the family, extremely shy, and mysterious

Remembrance • Remembrance is a elegy poem; meaning sad and negative • It is about one who is reminiscing or remembering a lost love who had died. • Basically the poem talks tous about someone she loved deeply, misses dearly, and feels that she has not known happiness since his passing, and feels bad that sometimes forgets him. • The rhyme scheme of the poemis(AB,AB)

  5. The meaning of the Poem • The poem is talking about a love that Emily had when she was young. He died 15 years before she wrote the poem, and she talks about how she never loved anyone as much as she loved him. She is stressing the importance and influence of love on her life and thoughts. She states that she feels guilty when she forgets about her love for only a minute. She believes that her only salvation is death, so that she can be with him; and so she died 15 years later at the age of 30.

Literary Devices • Imagery: theformationofmentalimages • Ex. “cold in the earth—and fifteen wild Decembers” • It gives the reader the image of a grave, which has a lot of snow on it because it has been 15 cold years. • Symbolism: representing things by symbols • Ex. “Once drinking deep of that divinest anguish” • Shows us that the author is feeling a lot of sadness.

Vocabulary • Beset: to set or stud with or as if with ornaments • Hover: to stay very close to a person or place • Weaned: to start feeding (a child or young animal) food other than its mother’s milk • Languish: to continue for a long time without activity or progress in an unpleasant or unwanted situations • Sternly: very serious especially in an unfriendly way

  8. The social context of the poem • Emily only talks about her lost love in the poem. She does not mention anything about the society she lives in. However she lived in a slavery filled England. It was the time that Frederick Douglas published his book.

Poetic Devices • Personification: • “Hopes which obscure” • hope cant obscure because it is a feeling • Apostrophe: • “sweet love of youth forgive, if I forget thee” • she is telling him to forget her, which is impossible because he is dead • Alliteration: • “No later light has lightened” • She uses the same first letter for more than one word.

Some of the lines in the poem that might confuse you. • “Then did I check the tears of useless passion” • Emily cries whenever she thinks of him, but her tears are useless because he is dead. • “Cold in the earth—and fifteen wild Decembers” • Her love is dead and it has been 15 years since his death. • “Faithful, indeed, is the spirit that remembers” • She thinks she has been faithful to her dead love by remembering him.
