Making a percentage • A switchboard takes 10 calls for an ambulance and 30 for the fire brigade, what percentage of calls are for ambulances? • How do we do it? • How many things (in this case phone calls) altogether? • 10 + 30 = 40, then divide the number of the thing we are after by the total number and multiply by 100 • So.....10 ÷ 40 × 100 = 25%

Fractions decimals and percentages • ¼ is 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25 • Didn’t we just say, to find a percent, it’s the bit we have/need, divided by the total and multiply by 100? • So ¼ is 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25 then 0.25 × 100 = 25% • So ½ is 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 then 0.5 × 100 = 50%
