On-farm Electricity – Why it is important Electricity is a significant on-farm cost Accounts for approximately1.2% of the dairy farm carbon footprint Total dairy farm electricity use estimated at 1,000,000 MWh Slightly more than used in processing plants On-farm input costs
Dairy Energy Assessment Programme Initial Pilot Detailed analysis of 150 farms to establish actual reduction potential Assessment process Audit, historic use analysis, benchmarking, support to implement recommendations Scope All farm electricity use – milking shed, effluent systems, irrigation etc Evaluation of all energy supply options including on farm renewable generation Programme improvement Follow up interviews to better understand implementation challenges
Building on a proven approach Building on successes at Fonterra’s manufacturing sites. A similar approach there has reduced energy use per tonne of product by 15% over last 6 years.
DEAP – Why is Fonterra involved? We know improvement is possible Challenge for any single farm to achieve alone Promotes the economic, environmental and social sustainability of our suppliers, our cooperative and our community Industry leadership and a partnership approach
