  5. Relative Clauses the who, the where, and the which that define the person, the place or the thing

  6. What is a relative clause? DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES are clauses that give essential information to define or identify the person place or thing we are talking about.

  7. Relative clauses using who, where, and which We have three kinds of nouns… People Places Things We can make relative clauses using… “who” “where” “which” “that” is often used informally in place of each of these

  8. Example People: Sean Connery is an actor. Sean Connery used to play James Bond. Sean Connery is an actor who used to play James Bond.

  9. Example Places Starbucks is a coffee shop. I usually go to Starbucks to study. Starbucks is the coffee shop where I usually go to study.

  10. Example Things This is a novel. This novel was written by Lionel Shriver This is a novel which was written by Lionel Shriver.

  11. Build your sentence is which This bag present my mother gave me. “which” can be used as the subject of the clause (or just the conjunction)

  14. Grammar Reference, p. 108 • Fill in the blank in exercise “a”. • Write out all 8 sentences in exercise “b”.

  15. 3 Topics, 3 People, 3 Questions Your 3 Topics should be chosen from each of these categories: • kinds of people you hate • kinds of places you feel uncomfortable • kinds of music you enjoy • The first question will be answered with a relative clause for description. • Then follow-up questions use any grammar to find more details.
