Early Life • Born in Atlanta, Georgia March 20, 1957 • Real name is Shelton Jackson Lee • He attended John Dewey High School • He went to Morehouse College • He made his first film while in college called Last Hustle in Brooklyn • He graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A. in Mass Communication • He then went to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he earned a Master of Fine Arts
FACTS • Love & Basketball won Best Film, Best Film Poster, and Best Soundtrack. • When the Levees Broke won three Emmy Awards. • If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise is a documentary about the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. • Kobe Doin’ Work is an 83 minute film that focuses on one day of the life of NBA star Kobe Bryant. • Miracle at St. Anna is Spike Lees most recent hit film that was released September 26, 2008 in 1,185 theaters.
Awards • In 2007 Lee won 2 Emmy awards for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking and Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming for his movie When the Levees Broke • In 2011 If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise won a Black Reel award for Best Television Documentary • Lee and his movies have won and were nominated for many more awards also
