Phantoms in the Snow Written By: Kathleen Duble Genre: fiction some parts are nonfiction By: Santiago Formento
Summary This book is about a kid named Noah. Everyone in Noah’s family died except his uncle. His uncle was a part of a group called The Phantoms. The Phantoms were a military unit in World War 2 that went around on skis. They were very well camouflaged in the snow and were at a camp called Camp Hale. It was a place where they practiced training for the day that would come where they would go to Italy and attack the Germans in the mountains. Before going further into the story, I will tell you what happened with Noah. Noah was a young boy who grew up on a farm in Texas. Later his parents died from a disease called small pox. His reverend and a neighbor sent him to his uncle at Camp Hale instead of sending him to an orphanage. When Noah got off the train he looked for his uncle who was supposed to pick him up. He found a sign that said Camp He@#. He saw a ghost-like shape coming from a distance and fainted. He woke up at Camp Hale and lied about his age and said he was 16, but he was actually 15. He joined the army unit called the Phantoms because he knew his uncle was his only remaining family member. The first time he started training he meet this man named Daniel who taught him how to ski, but Noah thought that Daniel was just plain rude. Daniel said that Noah was a waste of time and didn’t want to train him, but his uncle, named Shelly, asked him to anyways. Later Noah figured out why Daniel was very mean, his parents were Jews in Poland and Hitler’s soldiers captured all the Jews and tortured and killed them. When he was finished learning how to ski he started training with the rifles, digging foxholes and crawling under barbed wire.
Recommendation I recommend this book to any one who wants to improve there reading skills and see what it’s like when you train to become a PHANTOM. I also recommend this book to any one who looks for information about what happened to Italy and what happened to spy’s that got captured at the mountains with the Germans. If you like skiing well this book has lots of skiing but a whole different way that seems impossible.
Questions 1. What questions would you ask the main character or writer if you could? I would ask the writer what was her emotions when she was writing the book. I would also ask Noah (the man character) what did he feel about going to war. Finally I would ask Noah if he loved his uncle with all his heart. 2. What did you learn by reading this book? I learned about the group called Phantoms and what they did during WWII. I know that this book is a fiction but that’s what you thought. The characters were not real but the rest was. I also learned what missions they had.
