NHSC Mission Build healthier communities by supporting qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the U.S. with limited access to care • Improve the health of the Nation’s underserved • Increase access to primary health care services • Provide quality, culturally competent care to those most in need • Develop community leaders 5
The Beginning of NHSC NHSC was created in response to health care crises that emerged in the U.S. in the 1950’s and 1960’s More physicians retired, leaving many areas of the country without medical services Rural states appealed to Congress for help, thus establishing what is now known as the National Health Service Corps 6

Recent Expansion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) included $300 million in expansion funds for the NHSC 4,000+ New Loan Repayment Awards 200+ Scholarship Awards Affordable Care Act (ACA) authorizes and appropriates $1.5 billion for the NHSC through 2015 FY2011: $290 million FY2012: $295 million FY2013: $300 million FY2014: $305 million FY2015: $310 million 8
Recent NHSC Policy Changes Full-to-Half-Time Conversion To provide additional flexibility for Corps clinicians and sites, NHSC announced a new half-time option for Corps clinicians and are now accepting requests for Full-to-Half-Time Conversions. Teaching Credit NHSC announced an additional option for Corps members serving at HRSA-approved Teaching Health Centers (THCs). Full-time NHSC members teaching in these facilities are now allowed to count up to 20 hours perweek spent teaching towards their service obligation HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions has designated 11 centers as HRSA-approved THCs to date. 9
NHSC Today • NHSC family consists of more than 7,500 clinicians currently serving • More than 30,000 clinicians have served as Corps members 10
NHSC Tomorrow FY2011 projected Field Strength is 10,500 By 2012, it is projected that nearly 10,700 clinicians will be caring for more than 13 million people, almost tripling clinicians in service since 2008 11
NHSC Programs Loan repayment program (LRP) Offers tax-free loan repayment for qualifying educational loans, in addition to a salary provided by site FY2011 application cycle opened Nov. 22, 2010 and will close May 26, 2011 Scholarship program (SP) Pays tuition, required fees, and some other education costs, tax free, for up to 4 years Application cycle will open in April 2011 13 13

NHSC Sites Provide comprehensive primary care medicine, primary care dentistry and/or primary care, mental and behavioral health services Ensure access to ancillary, inpatient and specialty referrals To qualify sites must: Be located in a HPSA Provide services on a discounted fee schedule Accept patients covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program Document sound fiscal management Have the capacity to maintain a competitive salary, benefits, and malpractice coverage package for clinicians 18
