  3. HISTORY OF SNMA • Established in 1964 by medical students at Howard University and Meharry Medical College under the auspices of NMA • 1967 became an independent organization • Today is the oldest and largest organization focused on the concerns of medical students of color

  4. MISSION OF SNMA The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinicallyexcellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.

  5. VISION OF SNMA • The SNMA commits to the empowerment of its members to take proactive steps to address minority health issues through advocacy and community service. As such, SNMA works to promote the professional development of its members, so that they may have the potential for being the underrepresented minority (URM) health leaders of tomorrow. • SNMA URM pre-medical students with knowledge, skills and experiences that are both pre-requisite and concomitant to professional participation in the health care industry. • SNMA commits to actively engaging in health advocacy to address inequities in medical education; racial/ethnic health disparities; and injustices in U.S. domestic and foreign health policy. SNMA will work to ensure equity in health care, serve as community health advocates, succeed as leaders in academic medicine, and direct health policy change.

NATIONAL INITIATIVES (3) • HIV/AIDS Intervention Prevention Corps Program (HIP Corps) • CDC Grant to SNMA (now entering 3rd year of CDC funding) • SNMA members serve as site coordinators at participating chapters nationwide • Program Objectives: • Reduce the incidence of new HIV infection among underserved youth through the demonstration of an effective, culturally sensitive HIV/AIDS prevention education and community outreach program. • Strengthen university and medical college infrastructure to provide culturally competent HIV/AIDS education and community service opportunities. The HIP Corps training manual is designed to educate volunteers on HIV intervention/prevention education and provides culturally sensitive information

  24. Goal Setting • Organizations cannot survive and flourish for a very long time without some basic goals. Goals give purpose and direction for the entire year. They are simply a statement of purpose. They do not state action, but rather the results desired.

  25. Making Goals a Reality: Step-by-Step Objectives • Plan specific steps • Identify the steps • Place tasks in appropriate order • Set deadlines

  26. Making Goals a Reality: Step-by-Step Objectives • Select and organize resources (Human and Material) • Identify what motivates individuals • Select persons who are interested and knowledgeable • Assess funds and supplies • Organize the resources so that they are accessible.
