I have the ukulele because on the first day of school Stargirl (Susan) Caraway plays the ukulele for everyone. It is someone’s birthday and she sings “Happy Birthday” to him. This is a big part because singing “Happy Birthday” becomesa tradition for her. Everyone is in awe because she is so different.
I have the rat because she has a pet rat named Cinnamon who is always on her shoulder. This is big because they (for a while) accept the fact that she is different and they admire that. This impresses Leo because she’s not afraid to be different.
I have the pioneer dress and the lipstick (one picture) because she used to wear pioneer dresses all the time until one day her boyfriend, Leo, tells her to change and that’s when “Stargirl” became “Susan”. This shows how bad Leo wants to be accepted because they started shunning Stargirl and him for being together.
I have the mockingbird because they are going to the Oratorical Contest and the bus driver tells “Susan” that mockingbirds have been chirping forever. He tells her that when you hear one you may have heard a Moa (prehistoric bird). This motivates “Susan” to change her Oratorical Contest piece.
Will “Susan” stay “Susan”? Will Stargirl have second thoughts about the contest? Read the book to find out…
