2. Why did Britain Colonize Nigeria? Gave Britain political power Increase religious beliefs • preferably Christianity Had many natural resources • such as oil

3. What Tribes are Affected ? • Igbo – southeastern tribe • Oyo – southwestern tribe • Benin – southern tribe

4. How did it Affect the Tribes? • Religion was overwhelmingly changed to Christianity • Language was changed to English • Would cause problems between tribes - Igbo people gained a strong sense of ethnic identity • Living conditions changed • The attire would change depending on age • Surroundings would change from dirt and trees to concrete roads and buildings

5. What is the Overall Effect of Colonialism on Nigeria? • The overall effect was changing from tradition to modern day • For example, in Africa many people wore very little to no clothing but when the British came they wore clothing especially if you had something needed to be hid • The Igbo people had to familiarize themselves with the new buildings and locations, but before they could decipher what buildings were which. They had to learn new ways to deal with people and be comfortable with new people living in the village

6. How is Nigeria Recovering from Colonialism? • They had to abide by rules given but they continued traditions like language, performing arts, visual art, literature, rites to passage, and some religion. • There are organizations improving education and living conditions • In some organizations many people got translators because they didn’t learn English • The Igbo people and an organization are undergoing a non-violent struggle to have an independent Igbo state
