First Person • A character in the story is telling the story. • The reader knows the character’s thoughts. • Signal words: “I”, “me”, or “my” • Example: “I couldn’t wait to start my trip! I grabbed my bags and started to walk!
2nd Person • The narrator tells the story to another character using "you"; the story is being told through the addressee's point of view. • This is a very rare point of view • Signal Words: you, yours, yourself • Examples: • Written speech or public address • Letter or email • Directions-how-to, pamphlet
Third Person • A narrator outside of the story tells the story. • Signal words: “he” or “she” or “they” • Example: Sally was so excited to take a trip! She packed his things and started to walk.
Third Person: Limited • A narrator outside the story tells the story AND knows what ONE character thinks and feels. • Signal words: “he”, “she” or “they” • Example Sally was so excited to take a trip! She packed his things and started to walk.
Third Person Omniscient • A narrator outside of the story tells the story AND knows what EVERY character is thinking and feeling. • Signal words: “he”, “she”, “they” • Example: Sally was so excited to take a trip! She started to walk, thinking about visiting her friend Molly. Molly was at home, waiting happily for Sally to arrive.
