  2. Background Knowledge • The park consist of 2 active volcanoes (Kilauea, Mauna Loa) • Originally was “Kilauea National Park”, but later changed to included Mauna Loa • It is located on the “Big Island” of Hawai'i

  3. Environment/Climate • The park has over 505 square miles of land • In some spots it can be a tropical forest while in others it can be a desert • Scenery ranges from the views of the lava filled oceans to the high mountain peaks of the park • The park does have a main road but it is coved by lava in many spots

  4. Most Recognizable Animals • Happy Face Spider (only found in Hawai’i) • Nene (State bird) • Feral Pig • Black rat • Indian mongoose • Pueo

  5. Kilauea • One of 5 shield volcanoes that make up the Hawaiian islands • Rock dates back too 23000 years old • 4091 ft elevation above ground

  6. Mauna Loa • The largest volcano on earth • Magma comes from the Hawai'i hotspot • 13679 ft elevation • Known for its abundance of constant lava flows

  7. Myths/Ancient History • Ancient Hawaiians believe in the goddess Pele (god of fire) who first started the Kilauea eruption in 1790 • Pele has a sister: Namakaokahai - Goddess of the Sea • If you take a stone from the mountain you will have bad luck until it is returned to its exact spot.

  8. Tourism • Is a great spot for vacation • If you are a chocolate macadamia nut love it is located by the Hawaiian nut factory • Best black sand beaches in the world • The clearest water in the world
