YouTube - Taking a Compass Bearing Setting a compass bearing
1. Line up the side of the base plate with the direction you are interested in on the map 1. Reading a bearing from a map
2. Turn the compass wheel until “N” and the red orienting lines on the base of the wheel are parallel with the blue grid lines on the map. • Read the grid bearing on the main central red direction of travel line on the compass 2. Set the Grid bearing on the compass
For GRID to MAGADD! At the moment in this part of the country you add 2 degrees 3. Convert the Grid bearing to a Magnetic bearing(because a compass points to Mag north, not grid north) so if the Grid bearing is 277° the Magnetic bearing will be 277°+2º=279º Now turn the dial so that it reads 279º
Direction of Travel Arrow 4. Remove the compass from the map, hold it level in front of you so the compass needle is free to turn. Turn your body until the red compass needle (magnetic north) lines up with the red orienting arrow on the base. Using the direction of travel arrow, sight a distant landmark and move towards it. 4. Follow the Magnetic bearing
