  3. Corrections and prisons – a mans world • Female prisoners represent 2-9% of the prison population globaly. (Sweden:5,9%) • Female prisoners have more, and different needs as compared to men

  4. Questions to be discussed • What challenges do, in particular, female prisoners face? • What can be done to address these problems? • What obstacles can you expect to face?

  5. Legal framwork and international instruments • SMR for prisoners (1955) • SMR for female prisoners; • United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders. “the Bangkok Rules” (2010),Is a complement to the existing SMR’s.

  6. Staff dimension • Female correctional officers are generally: • Relegated to minor tasks • Undervalued by their male colleagues • Lack opportunities for promotion • Lack adequate facilities for female use only • Suffer from sexual harrassment and abuse

Key facts and figures • In the 32 years between 1957 and 1989 a total of only twenty women served as UN peacekeepers; • 2012, around 30 percent of the 19,800 civilian staffs are female. • Women constitute 4% of military personnel and 10% of police personnel in UN PKO’s. • Three all-female UN police units have been deployed around the world: Indian in Liberia; Bangladeshi in Haiti and Samoan in Timor
