  1. I-539 Online Instructions Please read this very carefully. Once you have completed your I-539 and all of the documentation required for the application, please turn it in to your advisor. They will then issue the I-20.

  2. Your I-539 has 5 pages. In the following slides, you will have a chance to see what is required of each page, in depth. Please make sure that all information you enter is correct and up-to-date! Otherwise, USCIS will request a “Request for Evidence” (RFE), that will slow down your application!

  3. Page 1 Part 1: “Information About You” *Important information to remember: Put in your immigration advisor’s name And the address of ISSS here at GSU. Everything else is your personal information. [Advisor’s Name], International Student and Scholar Services Ignore this section! P.O. Box 3987 Atlanta GA 30302-3987

  4. Part 2 Important information: Choose “b” for “A Change of Status. The new status I am requesting is “F-1” Number of people included depends. If you are on the only person changing status, then please check “a”. F-1 Ignore this section

  5. Part 3 Important information: As you are doing a Change of Status, you can ignore questions 1 and 4, and check “No” for questions 2 and 3. Ignore this section

  6. Part 4, Sections 1 and 2 Important information: Put in the information based on your passport. If you have updated your home country address since moving to the U.S., then use that updated address. Ignore this section

  7. Page 2 Part 4, Section 3 Important information: More than likely, you will be clicking “No”on most of these. As the instructions state, if you answer “Yes” on any of these answers, you must explain on a separate sheet of paper attached to this application.

  8. Part 4, Section 3 (continued) Important information: The instructions below detail how you answer question “g”. Depending on how you answer it, will determine which large box you fill out on page 4. (See section below on Page 4 for more information.

  9. Page 3 Section “H” Important information: Unless you are in J-1/J-2status, answer “no”. Part 5 Click on whether or not you can read and understand English. If you can, then ignore “Part 6” at the bottom of the page. VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure you when you sign your name in the “Signature” box, that you do so in BLUE INK. They will reject applications not signed in blue ink.

  10. Page 4 Under Part 7, you can ignore this section, unless an attorney does your application for you. “Part 4” If you answered “yes” to question 3f on page 2, fill out the information for the first large box. • If you answered “no” to question 3g on page 2, • fill out the information for the second large box. • If you are a primary (e.g. H-1B), please provide • proof of how you are being supported • (check stubs,bank statements) • If you are a dependent, please show • how you and/or your primary are being • supported. (primary’s check stubs, bank • statements) If you answered “yes” to question 3g on page 3, fill out the information for the second large box.

  11. Page 5* *For most applicants, this page will not apply to you and you can discard it. For those of you with dependents applying as well, please add their information individually in each separate section.
