Good Morning! • Please have out your journals & open to act. 73. • Make sure you have your data table complete & Analysis #1 & 2.
Good Morning! • Have out your Science Book , pen/pencil & Journal ready to Activity 74. • Begin to Set up Journal for Act. 74
Agenda • Objective • Set up Journal Act. 74 • Part A • Homework
Objective • Students will be able to design and conduct an experiment that relates the speed of an object to its release height on a ramp.
Act. 74-Measuring Speed • Date:2/13/14 • Challenge Question: • Getting Started: What things can contribute to a car accident? • How did people measure speed before certain devices were invented?
What things can contribute to a car accident? • Under the influence of alcohol & drugs • Speed • Failure of brakes • Texting, talking on phone • Steering(inexperienced drivers) • Weather • Distractions • Health conditions
Devices before Timers Calculations Measurements, ruler, meter sticks Now Speedometer Speed tracking device Electronic speed limit sign cameras
Pre-lab • 1. Speed • 2. Time interval • 3. Distance • 4. Error
Introduction pg. E-7 Speed= distance/time Challenge Question: How can you measure speed of a moving car?
How did people measure speed before certain devices were invented? • All speed tracking devices measure the time interval it takes to travel a distance. A time interval is the elapsed time between two events. For example: the start and finish of a race
Build Background: Speed • An object in motion takes time to change its position. • Speed is the measurement of the rate of change in position and can be linear or rotational. • Many moving objects do not travel at a constant speed.
To measure speed • The distance or the length between two points that are measured. • Speed measurement units are distance and time unit. For example: miles per hour (mph) or degrees per second (dps)
Pg. E-8 • Materials: pg. • Procedure: Part A: Measuring Time and Distance Read steps #1-3 Copy data table on pg. E-9
Why do you think you are asked to complete 3 trials? • Repeating a trial several times improves the quality of the data. • Error or unavoidable inaccuracies that occur because no measurement can be made with perfect precision.
Roles • Procedure Captain: Read the procedure • Getter: Get the materials/Timer & record data • Facilitator: Record the data & Conduct experiment • Spokesperson: Conduct experiment
Part A: measuring time and distance • Complete Steps #4-8 with your partner in your group • Complete the data table with your results for each trial. • When complete answer Analysis #1 in your journal
Complete Data Table • Use Formula • Speed= Distance/Time • Create a line graph of the data • Write conclusion • Answer Analysis #1
Good Afternoon! • Please take out your books & journals to Act. 74 • Please make sure you completed your data table, line graph, conclusion, & Analysis #1
Part B:The Effect of Release Height • Read Steps #9-13 • Complete steps #9-13 on a piece of a paper with your partner • Once you and your partner have created a rough draft, raise your hand so I can check it!
Part B: The Effect of Release Height • 9. Write Prediction of what will happen.
Activity • Complete steps #9-13 on a piece of a paper with your partner • Once you and your partner have created a rough draft, raise your hand so I can check it! • Then write your final draft in your journal of your procedure!
Part B • Create a procedure of how a lesser height would affect its speed? • Write your materials • List your steps of how you would find the speed • Create a data table • Raise your hand when you are done!
Complete • Create your procedure • Create a data table • Complete your experiment & record your results in the data table • Write a summary for your results
Homework • Write your results, explain what happened in your procedure. • Find the speed & average show your work! • Analysis Questions Pg. E-10 # 2, 4 & 5 • Create a line graph of your data table, write a conclusion Extra Credit Due Friday 2/21/14 Analysis #6 & Extension #2
Homework • Analysis Question #3 pg. E10 • Also finish #1 if you didn’t from earlier Extra Credit: Analysis #6-Reflection Question & Extension #2 Due Friday
