  2. Book Club Community • This is not an independent reading assignment. • Your community is there to support you. • You are there to support your community. • Because you are part of a community, you will have responsibilities.

  3. Managing your reading • Divide the pages into manageable chunks. • Consult a calendar! • Determine consequences for group members who have not read. • Complete the reading agreement and turn it in to me.

  4. Shared responsibilities • Every member must share in every responsibility. • At different times, each person will lead a particular discussion. • Your total responsibilities are not excused for your leadership duties.

  5. Vocabulary Collector • Ask group members to share vocabulary that either contributed to your understanding of the reading ORconfused you. • Keep a list of words that are common to multiple lists. • Lead reading for context clues. • Help facilitate confirming the working definition of words. • Lead the group in selecting a list of words you could start to use right away.

  6. Fact Checker • Lead the oral summary of the reading. • This should not be a retelling – the difference is in the details! • Check to be sure facts are accurate. • Match the summary to the following criteria: Important events, key details, in order, no opinion, in your own words.

  7. Sign Watcher • Lead the discussion of signposts. • Offer opportunities to ask clarifying questions. • Discuss similarities and differences in what signposts were noticed. • Use signposts to discuss patterns. • Use follow up questions from the chart. • Encourage predictions. • Be flexible.

  8. Sentence Stalker • Lead the discussion of meaningful, powerful, well written sentences and passages. • Pay particular attention to figurative language, imagery, and unique word choice. • Lead the discussion of mood, tone, and effect on the reader.
