The Character of Godly TeensDaniel 1 Childhood is being extended through High School & College – and many graduates still refuse to grow up Thankfully, there are still many exceptions of young adults who are mature Daniel and his friends were exceptions in their generation
Jerusalem is Captured Daniel 1:1-2 All Judean kings after Josiah were evil The prophecies were fulfilled and Jerusalem fell to Nebuchadnezzar in 605 B.C.
The Captured Youths Daniel 1:3-4 Nebuchadnezzar wanted youths from royal families he could train to be his surrogates in ruling conquered nations “youth” (yeled) children and young adolescents he could instill Babylonian ways and loyalty Beware of those seeking to turn your teens away from you to secularism
The Captured Youths Daniel 1:3-4 These youths also had to be physically and mentally fit They had to be competent to stand before the king – follow royal etiquette They were trained in Chaldean language and culture
The King’s Provision Daniel 1:5 The king’s “choice food” was part of their training designed to gain their loyalty as well as keep them healthy They would receive training for three years before entering the king’s service
Four Faithful Teens Daniel 1:6-7 Daniel = “God is my judge” Belteshazzar = “Bel protect his life” Hananiah = ‘Yahweh has been gracious’ Shadrach = “Command of Aku” Mishael – “Who is like God” Meshach = “Who is like Aku” Azariah = “Yahweh has helped” Abednego = “Servant of Nebo”
Daniel’s Resolve & Request Daniel 1:8-13 The text does not state why, but Daniel recognized the king’s choice food and wine would defile him Daniel did not want to defile himself – but he was a captive Daniel made an appeal instead of just being defiant. He put the matter in God’s hands

God’s Blessings Daniel 1:17-21 God blessed Daniel & his friends so that they were superior in every way – including being trustworthy God also gave Daniel the ability to understand visions and dreams
Conclusions Daniel & his friends were young, but they already possessed the key characteristics that would make them successful – they knew & trusted God Our young people face the same challenge to know and trust God in the midst of an ungodly culture
