Stage 6 syllabus A Stage 6 syllabus typically includes a: • Preliminary course • HSC course Year 11 students study the Preliminary course Year 12 students study the HSC course
What is a unit? A unit of study refers to the hours of study contained in a course • one unit courses contains 60 indicative hours in the Preliminary course (Year 11) and 60 indicative hours in the HSC (Year 12) course example English Extension I • 2 unit courses contains 120 indicative hours in the Preliminary course (Year 11) and 120 indicative hours in the HSC (Year 12) course example English (Advanced) • the majority of Stage 6 courses are 2 unit courses

What is a pattern of study? A pattern of study identifies the: • number of courses to be studied • sequence in which particular courses are to be studied • number of units of study the course is to contain

To be registered for study beyond Year 10 a home schooled child would follow a pattern of study using Board of Studies Stage 6 syllabuses A pattern of study includes at least 12 units for the Preliminary course and 10 units for the HSC course, and at least: • two units of English • six units of Board Developed courses • three courses of two units value or greater, and • four subjects
