What is Honours? • A fourth year of undergraduate study following completion of a regular three-year undergraduate degree. • An opportunity for more specialised, advanced work in either one or two disciplines.
What is Combined Honours? An Honours degree taken in two disciplines. • Must have a major in both disciplines. • Requires approval from both School/Discipline Honours Coordinators.
What does an Honours year involve? • 48 credit points, in one year of full-time study, or two years of part-time study. • Coursework units worth 24 points (usually 2 units worth 12 points each). • A research component, called a thesis, which is usually worth 24 points.
A thesis? What’s that? • A thesis is a research project on a topic that is of particular interest to you. It is derived from your discipline. • 15,000-18,000 words in length. • The project is supervised by an academic in your discipline.
Study Abroad • Can take 18 to 24 points of coursework study at an overseas institution. • Thesis component must be done at Monash. • All units are approved in consultation with the Honours coordinator prior to departure. • All written work is returned to the discipline Honours coordinator who will assess it and provide a Monash grade.

Am I eligible to do Honours? You must have: • Completed (or be completing) an undergraduate degree with a major in your chosen discipline(s). • You must have majored in your Honours discipline(s) and achieved at least a distinction average (70%+) in 24 points of units in your chosen Honours discipline(s), 18 points from third-year level and the next highest second or third-year unit
How do I apply? • Apply online! Applications can be made via the Arts website. • Arts > Future Students > Honours Degrees > Applications and Entry Requirements. • Click on the Apply Here link under ‘Domestic internal Monash applicants’. • Fill in the online form and Submit. • Your application will be assessed and you will be sent an outcome via email.
International students • Entry Requirements Entry requirements are the same for International students and local students. • Application Process In addition to submitting the online application form, International students must apply through International Recruitment Services (IRS). This is an online process, and you should apply as soon as possible.
When do I need to apply? • To begin Honours Semester 1 2015: Application deadline: Friday 31 October • To begin Honours Semester 2 2015: Application deadline: 30 June 2015
Can I apply before I finish my degree? • Yes! Don’t wait to get your results before you apply – apply by the deadline. • Assume you will pass all units you are currently enrolled in for this year/semester. • For questions about the progress of your application contact the Arts Honours Administrator in Arts Student Services.
Fees • All places in the Faculty of Arts Honours program (except for International students) are CSP (HECS). • Continuing International students are charged at the continuing rate for their undergraduate degree.

Scholarships – applying • Visit the Arts Honours website: Arts > Future Students > Honours > Scholarships • Visit the Monash Scholarships website: www.monash.edu.au/study/scholarships • All enrolled Honours students are automatically assessed for Arts Honours scholarships (Merit and Study Assistance). You need to apply for other scholarships, including Monash Jubilee and Disadvantaged.
