  10. Adjectives • Adjectives describe nouns. • Examples: • The yellow car drove quickly down the quiet street. • The flower is beautiful.

  11. Adjective Practice • After thirteen years, the furry, black cat died of fright. • Last night, I was ironing the fancy dress I’d wear to the birthday party. • My favorite author is Kate Chopin, who wrote the best-selling novel The Awakening.

  12. Action Verbs • Describe an action being completed by the subject of the sentence • Example: Josh ran across the street. • It may include a helping verb • Josh did run across the street.

  13. Find the Action Verb • Paul lifted the barbell above his head. • The company exploited its workers. • Laurie did finish the painting finally. • Sometimes the oven over-heats. • The girls giggled and laughed all through the movie. • I swam laps in the pool and then dove off the board.

  14. Linking Verbs • Linking verbs link the subject of the sentence with a noun or an adjective in the predicate. • Example: Mark is a District Conservationist. • It may include a helping verb: • Example: Mark has been the District Conservationist for 27 years.

  15. Most Common Linking Verbs • To be • Is, am, are, was, were • Become • Sensory words • Look (It looks nice. Vs. I looked at the bird.) • Smell (The flower smells pretty. Vs. I smell bacon cooking)

  16. Find the Linking Verb • George is stubborn. • Joseph and George were happy to be alive. • It appears that ghosts are to blame. • It was hot outside.

  17. Adverbs • Adverbs modify (describe) verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. • Sometimes end in -ly • Adverbs tell when, where, how much, and to what extent • Examples: • Verb: I read the book quickly. • Adjective: The woman is quite pretty. • Adverb: I read the book very quickly.

  18. Find the Adverb • I waited patiently for the doctor. • Jack finally asked for a raise. • Yesterday, I went to the store. • The class will meet here tomorrow. • You can always set your watch by him. • Sometimes cats are finicky.

  19. Preposition • Shows a noun’s or pronoun’s relationship to another word in a sentence. • (Anything a cat can do with a box) • Begins a phrase that ends with a noun • Examples: • The cat jumped over the box. • The cat ran into the box. • The cat sat beside the box.

  20. Find the Prepositional Phrase • Jody look into the hour glass. • After the football game, I ate cookies. • I looked around the corner for my cat. • Sometimes, I eat food in my room.

  21. Conjunctions • Conjunctions join things together. • Examples: • Joe and Judy are twins. • I like pizza but not lobster. • Do you want to ride a bike or drive a car?

  22. Interjections • An interjection is a word added to a sentence to convey an emotion or a sentiment. • It is not grammatically related to any other part of the sentence. • Examples: Wow! Oh my gosh!

  23. Find the Conjunctions and Interjections • Hey, did you go to Red Wing and see a movie? • No, I went shopping, but I didn’t buy anything.
