  2. Opening Thoughts • This is a lot of fun! That does not diminish the importance nor make light of the challenges. • The process is inclusive of you and what you would like to do; no part is exclusive or prescribed. • Energy and the environment continue to be at the forefront of OSU’s topmost administration, see President Gee’s latest efforts at: http://www.osu.edu/news/newsitem2357

  3. On Going Actions • Results of LOI: 5 of 16 selected. Competition includes great ideas: (a) water and ecosystem, (b) precision medicine, (c) poverty solutions, and (d) food security. • ILO is soliciting letters of interest from over 30 companies, including AEP. Sharell has “yes’s” from 9 companies. I have asked for letters of interest from YSU, Case, Battelle, NASA Glenn, EWi, and TechColumbus. • Asking for cooperation from CWC, BPRC, CESE, IMR, CAR and IEE. Asking Fisher led LOI to join us, their focus is on innovation process, like Google or P & G. • Collected 17 bios from 58 signed-on people. Thus far: $165M, 1400 papers, 20 books/chapters, 13 patents. • First proposal draft completed March 23. Its crude, but gets us going. • Always open and sharing of ideas with everyone.

We Need Decisions On These • Integration: the research themes, are these two the best approach? • Budget: $750,000 is not designed for 30+ faculty, so how best to apportion these funds? • Referees of LOI ask that we specifically address 3 questions, in addition to the typical outline. • Its about the research, but I believe curriculum, communications, and development remain important • Are you OK with language indicating research to commercial implementation? • Who are the PIs and writing teams?

Core of the Proposal • Research integration and the Three Team approach • Need to: • Provide focus so the referees understand that we are truly integrating • Allow us to budget some amount of the $750,000 per year so that real breakthroughs can occur • Further describe how energy and the environment are integrated. • How do we leverage existing TIEs, centers, and programs without duplicating them? • These themes, OK? What are the key energy and environmental breakthrough points? • How do we create energy under a sustainable environment? • How do we produce sustainable transportation?

  6. The Budget • Max of $750,000 per year for 5 years, no annual rate, only cash. Use Three Team approach: • Two Integrated Research Teams: • $150,000 per year for faculty release time or hire only one full-time person for both teams? • Continues for all 5 years • Curriculum Team: • $150,000 per year Release time for one faculty and one staff member for first two years? • $100,000 per year remaining 3 years requires full-time staff person to manage curriculum (updating materials, securing rooms, getting lecturers, ensuring payments, etc.) • Longevity Team: • Half of the funds: $380,000 for two, full-time high-level staff members • Center Administration: • Can no longer do this on part time basis (e.g., IEE, CWC compared to BRPC, ASU Sustainability) • $90,000 pear year first two years, $140,000 per year last three years.

Referee’s Three Questions • "What special contributions can OSU make on a topic such as energy and environment, where there is great national and international competition?“ • "What are the specific areas within the general category of energy that will make this project stand out from others and generate significant external support?" • "What senior leadership is proposed for on-campus work as well as for connecting with external partners and groups?"

Its all about the research? • From Carol Whitacre: Regarding your earlier message, it will be important to paint the picture of what the TIEs have allowed you to do and how all of the past support has led you to the present place of applying for a Center of Innovation. The idea of building toward the Center application will be key. The Center application needs to be targeted at societal need and extending what you were able to do with the TIEs from a research perspective. While the education. development and communication pieces are nice, this has to be a research proposal primarily, taking the next steps beyond where the TIE was able to take you in the research arena. I think there is less concern about your directorship of the CWC and IEE. The big global research problem to be addressed, the stature of the team, and the plan for addressing the research problem are all critical components along with, of course, the plan for sustaining the program after the COI money is gone. Hope this helps. • So, what about Curriculum, Communications, and Development?

  9. Important Details • Who are the PIs and writing teams? • Governance plan for the center • Thoughts on allocation of indirect costs • Faculty reward structures for participating in the center • Metrics and criteria for evaluating success.
