Endorsements • An endorsement is a statement appearing on a certificate that identifies the specific subjects or grade level that the certificate holder is authorized to teach • Will all be endorsed in your particular foreign language Grades K-12 • Other endorsements have specific grade levels and subjects (High School (9-12), Middle Grade (5-8), and Primary (K-4)) • www.cote.illinois.edu/certification/Endorsements.html
Endorsements (cont’d) • High School endorsements • Requirements vary depending on endorsement • Typically 24 hours w/12 @ upper-level • Some exceptions • Science/Social Science • ESL/Bilingual
Endorsements (cont’d) • Middle grade endorsements (grades 5-8) • Require 6 hrs of middle grade coursework • CI 410, EPS 427, EPSY 430 if from UIUC • Online in summers • Other institutions courses can be found in our website • Generally18 hours in subject area • Notable exceptions: math/ESL (CI/DEIL) • Shortage areas: math, science, foreign language, ESL, bilingual
Endorsements (cont’d) • Primary (K-4) • English as a Second Language (ESL) • Bilingual Education • Foreign Languages (other than major)
Testing • Basic skills or TAP (required for admission) • No tests first year of program • Appropriate content-area test • State law. Must take/pass prior to student teaching • APT Grades K-12 • Typically taken during student teaching semester or at the same time content test is taken (convenient and saves $)
New ISBE Rules • No professional education or content course grade lower than a ‘C’ can be used toward certification, endorsement, or approval • No professional education or content course taken for CR/NC or proficiency credit can be used toward certification, endorsement or approval • High school endorsements that require 24 hours at least 12 hours must be at upper-level
Things To Know • If you change your name, change it in Banner and notify the Council • If you move, change your address in Banner. • Certification requirements are subject to change without notice
Handout/Reminder • Criminal Background Checks are being done on April 24 & 25 from 9 a.m. – noon and 12:30– 5 p.m. • First come first serve. Be prepared to wait. • Currently $52 (cash, Visa, MasterCard, or money order) (Check student portal if already taken to see if we have results – CBC date cleared). • ORI/Fingerprint Form (handout) • Must fill out/present when you have fingerprints done • Can also be done at Accurate Biometric locations (sites are on our website). • If you don’t hear that you are cleared within three weeks, contact us.
