What do I want from Education? • My children accepted as individuals, and welcomed as part of a community • Personal needs recognized, valued and used to inform the way they were taught • Regular reports about my children’s progress, are they keeping pace with national expectations? • Opportunities for input into how these goals were achieved.

  20. Ruamoko Marae • Ruamoko – the unborn and god of earthquakes • Turangawaewae tamariki turi • A place to stand for deaf children • Regardless of race, ethnicity, age or gender • Every-one formally joining our community is welcomed

  21. Ruamoko Marae • Establishing a place to stand - 10 years • Welcoming new students, families and staff • A spiritually neutral venue to discuss problems and resolve issues • A place to stay - over night • Aroha, Mana, Kia Kaha

  22. K.I.T. Days • Brings isolated deaf children from mainstream schools together • Planned for different age groups, interest groups • Hanging out and being deaf • Parents are welcome too! • Must cost less than $20 / head

  23. K.I.T. Days • Every child on Itinerant teacher caseloads invited at least three times a year. • Usually attended by 12-25 students • Open invitation to parents and mainstream staff

  24. Sports Day • An annual event – a whole community celebration. • School and Regions combine • Stay overnight on our Marae • Deaf way…. all day…

  28. Stakeholder Forum • Connecting with parents and mainstream school staff since 2001 • Building trust over seven years • Honestly asking for their feedback and advice • Twice a year road-trip around the region

  29. Stakeholder Forum Format has refined…. • Commitment to the process with feedback from previous visit • Quarterly report presented • Presentation about national issues • Involvement of students, parents, Deaf • Open forum discussion… So what’s new? What’s needed next?

  30. Axioms of Educational Politics • Never assume that Ministry has a master plan • Request don’t complain • Problem solvers get more air time than trouble makers • It is easier to affect change from the inside • Succession planning is always worth the effort!
