Malariaineffective to vaccines Isabelle Berrich
Caused from a bite of a Mosquito, that was infected by parasites (Plasmodium). • Will not get disease by being in contact with a person with the disease • Symptoms: flu like symptoms, high fever chills, and muscle pain. Malaria
300- 500 million people, world wide get this disease a year • 2 million of those people die from disease a year • 90% of the deaths occur in Africa • Areas effected: Africa, Asia, Central/ South America, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Parts of the Middle East and the Pacific Islands. Who is effected
Only protects 16.8% of the children with disease (every 4 years) • Vaccine works on 53% of the people with Malaria… but then after 8 months does not work • Tests show that people with Sickle Cell, do not get the disease Vaccine
I think the funding should be used to create a new medication that will kill the bacteria and to provide money to prevent the disease, to eventually try to get rid of the disease all together. Claim
We need to educate people in the affected areas of this disease • Everyone needs to have insecticide nets over their beds, windows, and doors • Research on new, stronger medications • Learn how to place Sickle Cell disease into cells • Remove all stagnant water (puddles) What we should do in the targeted areas
I predict, it will take 20 years • I am asking for 10 billion dollars • The funds will go for research and supplies Funding
Trial and error: ( 3yrs) Test what happens when sickle cell dna is placed into cells Distribute: (2yrs) Hand out medications to medical centers Testing: (2 yrs) Test how it works on the human body Research: ( 4 yrs) Find a new medication that the Mosquitos haven’t adapted to yet. Educate: (2 yrs) Educate the people of disease Approval: (1yr) Have the government approve of the medication Monitor: (6yrs) See if the new medications and preventions will work. Timeline
We will create a new medication • Supply plenty of insecticide nets and bug spray • Limit stagnant water • Encourage people to wear loose fitting, light colored clothes ( Mosquitoes, like dark hot areas) • Encourage to keep buildings cool • Give medication before, during, and after trip to a highly affected area So what we will do
To see if it is working… • Take a count (before) of the people with Malaria, and how many people died (for 6 years) • (After the testing is done) Take a count of the people with malaria (for 6 years) • If the average results are lower in deaths, then the medication worked How to see if it is working
