Student actively involved in band & private lessons will not only see the benefits in their class and band participation, but will find additional opportunities for financial aid in college – most will receive scholarship offers REGARDLESS OF MAJOR! … music participants received more academic honors and awards than non-music students… percentage of music participants receiving As, As/Bs, and Bs was higher than the percentage of non-participants receiving those grades.   7. Academic Credits • Band participation is a FINE ARTS CREDIT (graduation requirement) • Marching Band participation receives a .5 PE/Wellness Credit (1.5 total required)

Graduation Requirements and Band • Students determine “focused electives” • Plan for band for all four years • “High school music students have been shown to hold higher grade point averages (GPA) than non-musicians in the same school.” National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 “High school music students score higher on SATs in both verbal and math than their peers. In 2001, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 41 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework/experience in the arts.”Source: Profile of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, The College Board, compiled by Music Educators National Conference, 2001

Students will be required to earn 22 credits, including; English – 4 credits Math – 4 credits Algebra I, II, Geometry, plus 1 higher level math Science – 3 credits Social Studies – 3.5 credits (.5 Personal Finance) Foreign Lang. – 2 credits (same language) Fine Arts – 1 credit (i.e., Band) Health/PE/Wellness – 1.5 credits (.5 successful Pass/Fail completion of marching Band) Focused Electives (at least 3 in Focused Area of concentration) Grad.   10. …and more Graduation Info…. • Students may graduate “with distinction” if they maintain a “B” average, and: • Make & perform with the TN All-State Band / Orchestra / Jazz Band, OR make & attend the TN Governor’s School for the Arts • (remember the .5 credit for PE from Marching Band) • To be eligible for Mid-State / All-State / Governor School Band & Orchestra, students must be in “good standing” with their school music programs; the ONLY way to be in “good standing” is to be enrolled for the entire year! “Middle school and high school students who participated in instrumental music performances scored significantly higher than their non-band peers in standardized tests.” • University of Sarasota Study, Jeffrey Lynn Kluball; East Texas State University Study, Daryl Erick Trent

Competition vs Non-Competition Involvement • Students who are unable (due to sport / school activity) to commit to the competitive marching band may select the Non-Competition Option • Non-Comp Students participate in; • all home games • Rehearsals for Homecoming, parades, and concerts • Non-competition students do not participate in away games and band competitions • These students will be expected to; • Participate in all scheduled activities other than contests and away games. • Take lessons / submit a practice log • Audition for Mid-State / Rutherford County Honor Band

Band Camp Overview • New Member Camp • Meets prior to regular camp, just new students (competition & non-comp), with band leadership team. • July 23 & 24. 8:30 am – noon. • Guard and Percussion Camp Days • Week of July 23 • Band Camp • Students benefit from professional staff members. • July 25-27 & 30-Aug. 3. • Professional and experienced staff

  16. The Most Important Things to Bring to Band • … a good attitude and a willingness to learn • accept that mistakes will happen and you’ll learn from them • accept that fellow students and your directors are here to help you • a strong desire to leave as a better musician and individual

Moms and Dads are still the best audience and form of encouragement for young musicians Booster activities provide an excellent opportunity to watch and interact with your child in a positive manner Boosters meet monthly - There are several opportunities for involvement, depending on your individual schedule and comfort level….You might even have more fun than your child… “Look Ma, no hands…”
