WHAT DO WE DO? Project management for permanent pieces. El Paseo Invitational Exhibition Palm Desert Community Gallery Public Art Documentary Film Series Public Art Docent Program Valley wide “Desertscapes” event in April. Market the program and maintain the public art website.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM? City Ordinances #473, #673…. The fee is based on construction valuation. Government = 1% Commercial Development = ½ % Residential Development = ¼ %
Pd aquatic center artwork by paulhobson $46,000 Budget Artist selected through the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) Process. Site specific artwork. Integrated artwork: sandblasted into the concrete then stained and sealed.
EL PASEO INVITATIONAL EXHIBITION 18 sculptures in the median of El Paseo between Portola and Highway 74. Sculptures change every 2 years. Artists are paid an honorarium for their work.
PALM DESERT COMMUNITY GALLERY Located in City Hall. Reserved for artists from the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas. Host to 5 exhibitions per year, including the Student Art & Essay Contest. Opening receptions are open to all!
PALM DESERT PUBLIC ART DOCUMENTARY FILM SERIES Four films per season. Each film is followed by a Q&A with an expert in an area related to the film. Produced in partnership with UCR. Palm Desert Campus annually January – April. Educational tool. Free, and attended by 200-300 people per film.
PALM DESERT PUBLIC ART DOCENTS Volunteers are trained to give tours of the artwork in three locations: Civic Center Park (more than 20 pieces) El Paseo (18 pieces in the Exhibition and many more) Palm Desert Library (12 pieces)
PUBLIC ART DOCENTS CONTINUED… Free tours are offered on the second Saturday of the month September - June. Private groups can schedule their own free tour. Approximately 4,000 people have toured the art since the beginning of the program - mid – 2004.
“DESERTSCAPES” Collaborative program with at least 10 local organizations including Palm Springs Art Museum, Coachella Valley Water Color Society, Historical Society of Palm Desert, College of the Desert, Desert Plein Air Painters… Month-long celebration of plein air painting/artwork in the Coachella Valley. Lectures, paint-outs, exhibitions, tours, and more! Mostly free events.
MARKETING & WEBSITE Place ads for the program in appropriate magazines. Develop collateral materials such as the Art and Architecture map and the Art and Architecture book. www.palmdesertart.org
