How is Alopecia Autoimmune? • Alopecia is an autoimmune disease because the persons immune system attacks their own body. • In this case a persons immune system attacks their hair follicles, which causes the hair loss.
Symptoms • Most people with alopecia are generally healthy. • Alopecia is not physically painful • Symptoms can sometimes lead to full body hair loss.
Treatment • There is no cure for alopecia, but there are medications that can help grow hair back • These include • Corticosteroids • Rogaine • Anthralin • Topical sensitizers • Photochemotherapy
More About Corticosteroids • They can be injected at the place of hair loss • This causes swelling and pain • They can also be taken orally • When taken orally they supress the immune system.
