CONSTITUTIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE PRESIDENCY must be 35 a natural born U.S. citizen must have lived in the country for 14 years the only expressed, or written, qualifications in the Constitution
The President has many roles, sometimes called the "hats" of the President
Chief Executive makes sure that federal laws are enforced, appoints officials, issues executive orders
Chief Diplomat responsible for dealing with other countries, making treaties, appointing ambassadors
Chief Legislator proposes many laws to Congress, tries to push them through, can call a special session of Congress
Commander in Chief head of the armed forces of the United States. sends troops to other countries
Chief of Party leader of his or her political party
Chief of State symbol of the country

THE VICE PRESIDENT • an important position! • President of the Senate - only votes in case of a tie • Successor to the Presidency if the President is unable to continue (death, illness, crazy) • Partially determines Presidential disability
THE CABINET the heads of the Executive Departments Executive departments were established to concentrate on certain issues

INDEPENDENT AGENCIES Also part of the executive branch
Regulatory commissionsthat protect the public interest by controlling certain types of businesses and industries FOR EXAMPLE Federal Communications Commission, National Labor Relations Board, Federal Reserve System, Securities Exchange Commission
Government corporationsbusinesses run by the federal government FOR EXAMPLE The U.S. Postal Service Amtrak
Independent executive agencies agencies outside of the Cabinet that oversee a single area FOR EXAMPLE National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Central Intelligence Agency, Migratory Bird Conservation Committee
Independent agencies and regulatory commissions are controlled by the President, who is the head of the Executive branch. There are many people employed by the Executive branch - in fact, about 3 million!!!!
