  1. NikoShefer Tramps Africa’s Fjords

  2. Professor Niko Shefer has dedicated himself to education, but as a native African is, like many of his fellow countrymen and businessmen, he remains an avid outdoorsman. • Shefer has found lifelong relaxation in his love of fly fishing, born during his many hikes through the beautiful and awesome scenery of his native country. The fjords of South Africa are uniquely beautiful to both tourist and native alike. • Shefer frequently hikes the fjords with his wife, who’s the first lady of his heart.

  3. The fjords have a unique undersea valley shaped like U’s by advancing and receding ice ages of the past. The west coast of Africa boasts countless fjord valleys surrounded by mountains. • Fjords become perfect places for sea life and natural harbors due to the deposit of gravel and sand which has often been deposited in front of a glacier. • These deposits make for barriers where the fjord water is shallow, known as the mouth and dealer of the fjord. In the mouth, the sea is quiet.

  4. Niko Shefer is an avid fly fisherman, but chooses his favorite fjord fishing spots carefully. • Fjords are a varied mixture of saltwater and fresh water, and the makeup of the water quality of a fjord varies from summer to winter. • Shefer often investigates the water before he is sure he can trust the particular spot, as many of these areas has been known for their shady waters.

  5. Near the sea coasts fjords are saltier, while under the surface a reverse current of salty water flows toward the ocean. • Deeper fjords may have a low oxygen concentration which renders it unsuitable for fish and animals. • In a few fjords, there is a barrier of freshwater on the surface which causes the fjord to freeze over, leaving no oxygen below the surface.
