SCC’s General Education Learning Outcomes(Approved by Academic Senate – May 15, 2007) Upon completion of the AA/AS degree students will be able to… Communication • demonstrate effective reading, writing, and speaking skills. Quantitative Reasoning • demonstrate knowledge of quantitative methods and skills in quantitative reasoning. Depth and Breadth of Understanding • demonstrate content knowledge and fluency with the fundamental principles of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Course-embedded GELO Assessment Pilot Project (APP) (SLO subcommittee -2011) • Utilized existing course SLO assessments from spring and fall 2011(n=12 courses & 40 SLOs) • Aligned course SLOs with GELOs • Assigned rubric-based ratings of success • Compiled results for GELOs with most data (Depth & Breadth and Critical Thinking)

  9. Conclusions from GELO APP Depth and Breadth of Understanding • Students achieved at least a “Moderate” level of success for 82% of all course SLOs that aligned with this GELO. Critical Thinking • Students achieved at least a “Moderate” level of success for 80% of all course SLOs that aligned with this GELO. • Most of the Critical Thinking data (65%) came from SLOs that also applied to Depth & Breadth.

  10. Conclusions from GELO APP Combination of Depth & Breadth/Crit. Thinking • Students achieved at least a “Moderate/High” level of success for 69% of all course SLOs that aligned with both of these GELOs.

Conclusions from CCSSE Results • Small improvements observed across all GELOs from 2008 data • Room for significant improvement across most GELOs • Life Skills and Personal Development GELO included items with some of the highest ratings and other items with some of the lowest ratings across all GELOs.

  13. Next Steps in GELO Assessment • Increase # of courses and # of SLOs used in future assessments • Expand course-embedded assessment to more GELOs • Develop more streamlined process for alignment of course SLOs and determination of level of success • Feedback????
