Thematic Working Groups Ocean Acidification • Led by USAC member Dave Anderson; met 7-9 January 2009, Miami, Florida. • To define and examine key scientific problems in ocean acidification and marine carbon cycling and develop multidisciplinary approaches for addressing those problems. • Report released in June 2009 – identifies past ODP/IODP discoveries, future research directions, opportunities for immediate progress, and potential partnerships. New Groups in Year 6?

San Diego, Scripps Inst. Oceanography) and InterRidge • USSSP supporting 12 scientists, including two post-docs. $15,000 Mid-ocean Ridge and Ridge-flank Settings • 27-28 August 2009, Austin, Tex. • Convened by Nick Hayman and Gail Christeson (U.T. Austin) • USSSP managed application process, is providing logistical support, and is funding 32 of 37 participants. $39,950

CHART Workshop CHARTing the Future Course of Scientific Ocean Drilling • Six-week, online workshop to maximize and broaden U.S. community input to planning process for next drilling program. • Steering committee led by Christina Ravelo (U.C. Santa Cruz), overlapped with INVEST steering committee. • 2,242 visits by 695 individuals. • 535 posts by 186 registered users from 79 institutions. • Workshop report summarizes comments and presents vision for new science plan.

INVEST Conference IODP New Ventures in Exploring Scientific Targets • 23-25 September 2009, Bremen, Germany. • To define scientific research goals of next scientific ocean drilling program. • $205,000 in travel support for U.S.-affiliated researchers. • First call: 78 participants funded. • Second call: 56 applicants, including many students and early career researchers; expect to support 42 more participants.

Diversity Initiatives MS PHD’S Program • Supported 5 students and 1 administrator to attend May 2009 SSEPmeeting in Utrecht, Netherlands. • Planning underway to provide travel support for 2009-2011 cohort of students to visit Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and sail aboard research vessel before December 2009 AGU Meeting. Other Activities • Awaiting proposal from HBCU educator-at-sea for post-cruise outreach activity award of up to $6,000. Deadline: 1 August 2009. • IODP exhibit at SACNAS meeting– focus on interdisciplinary science.

New Education Initiative How to broaden participation in IODP? • Mentoring Program • Formalized mentoring program to provide personal connections for new participants • IODP Short Course - Thematic Model • Yearly short courses centered on IODP related themes, similar to ECORD Summer Schools. • Would focus on science and include programmatic information. • IODP Short Course - Programmatic Model • Yearly short course based on “nuts and bolts” of IODP (how to fund a site-survey cruise, how to sail, how to request samples) • Open to all scientific disciplines.

Communications Coalition for National Science Funding:15th Annual Exhibition & Reception • 24 March 2009, Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. • Annual event showcases research and education projects funded by NSF. • Draws Congressional staff, membersof Congress, and White House leaders. • USSSP and USIO supported presenceof Jim Channell (U. Florida) and RoyWilkens (U. Hawaii) to help representand discuss IODP.

ORPP and IODP White Paper • Ocean Research Priorities Plan – meant to set science priorities for ocean research over next 10 years • ORPP currently under review by Joint Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology (JSOST) • USAC white paper links scientific ocean drilling to themes in ORPP • USAC members to meet with JSOST co-chair at OSTP • Deadline for comments: 17 July

  22. Program Management Personnel Changes • Communications associate Jon Corsiglia has left the organization • Responsibilities assigned temporarily to Gregg Schmidt • Currently recruiting two new communications staff to serve USSSP and USIO • Also recruiting new champion to promote scientific ocean drilling Management Assessment Committee • Obligated Year 6 activity under USSSP cooperative agreement • USAC recommended potential committee members in Jan 2009 • Now seeking USAC input to develop terms of assessment
