YCS Spirituality (Focus on accompaniment) 11th Nov. 2011 6th IYCS ASIAN CHAPLAINS AND ANIMATORS FORMATION EXCHANGE (CAFÉ) Sriracha, Chonburi, Thailand “Called to be Ambassadors of Christ (2 Cor. 5:20): Student’s Education in the Hour of Interculturality and Religious Pluralism”
What is Spirituality “that child has spirit”
Some values – convictions – things we believe in? A way of living the things we believe in?
Different spiritualities • Ignition spirituality • Franciscan spirituality • Spirituality of liberation • Spirituality of Action • Spirituality of YCS
It also depends on how we understand / interpret This is influenced by my (our) experience
to me YCS spirituality Is a spirituality of love
YCS spirituality is one of preferential option for the poor But also one that engages with the rich and powerful and oppressors
How did Jesus dialogue with the rich and powerful? • Critiquing the rich (Woe to you rich…Lk 6:24) • Challenging the rich (Rich young man asked by Jesus to sell his possessions and give to the poor….(Mk 10:21) • Converting / convincing the rich and powerful to change their behavior (Zacchaeus….Lk 19:1-10)
YCS & Cardijn YCS Spirituality is linked to Cardijn (Means what we have been told / know / understand about Cardijn!) (What we want to claim Cardijn was / was not!) What was different in Cardijn as priest?
Cardijn tried to link worldly things with faith – looking at problems in the real world through eyes of faith • Was interested in matters like wages, working conditions – not just religious rituals • Instead of staying in a church, went to the world – factory • Tried to organize / mobilize the workers (oppressed – poor) – to improve their lives and situations in line with Christian values
Higher Ground For ourselves For those we are animating
To help students reach Higher Ground • Better academic results? • Better paying jobs? • Pray more? • More activities?
Help students reach Higher Ground • go beyond things they don’t believe in, when they are giving up their lives for something that is less than it can be ands to give their lives for things they believe in • go beyond the emptiness inside to live up to the dreams they have • to stand on their own • to live upto their visions and and follow their hearts • to give them the spirit to fly
Reaching for Higher Ground could be • Going beyond • My concerns • My family’s concerns • MY school’s concerns • MY community’s concerns • Become more aware / conscious of injustice / oppression • And becoming more involved in changing things for better
My own experience (or someone else’s) of helping students to higher ground (in YCS or outside YCS)
YCS spirituality as formative / educative From the synod of Bishops in 1971 • Education must make students know real situation of society and call for improvement and changes • Practical education comes through action participation and contact with situations of injustice • Education for Justice should start in the family and helped by the church, schools and other organizations (like YCS???)
Motorcycle diaries Walk out My own experience
Spirituality is a lot about personal choices About what I want to: • Believe • Be • Do And what I’m ready to give up / lose
YCS spirituality A choice of behavior that that will help transform truth of reality into truth of our faith
