1 Basic information of road system and safety improvement in China Development of China road net. By 2008,there are more than 3730000 kilometer highways ,and there are many high level highways in China highway net.
1 Basic information of road system and safety improvement in China Increase of transportation. There are about 27 billionpassenger transportation and 19 billion tons of goods transportation in China in 2008.
1 Basic information of road system and safety improvement in China High death toll of traffic accident. There are more than 260000 traffic accidents in China in 2008 and more than 70000 peoples lost their lives.

Countermeasures have Improved the traffic safety condition evidently • With the implement of Highway Safety Improvement Project: • There were 15% vehicles increase in 2004,but the traffic accidents reduced more than 20%. • Basing on the investigation of 4757kilometer highways with implement of Highway Safety Improvement Project , 1162 vehicles had been forbidded to run off the roadside. The traffic accidents with more than 3 peoples death had been reduced about 46%.

Some segments always have more accidents than other segments in the highway: • The complicated traffic stream character and the bad alignment are the main accident reason. But few alignment improvements were done in the Highway Safety Improvement Project, so some safety problems cannot be solved radically • It is more important to improve the highway safety during the highway design.

The improvement project have changed the safety distribution character of the highway. • The segments with accidents went on increasing will be done more improvement works in the future。 • The segments with accidents went on debasing have good improvement effects . The experiences can be extended
3 Road net of IRAP China and the traffic safety data iRAP network in China • iRAP network in china covers Mentougou District, Yanqing District, Changping District, Daxing District, Tongzhou District of Beijing. • The total length is 2100 km, as shown in the map. Including • Expressway 300 km • The first-grade highway 200 km • Second-grade highway 500km • Third-grade highway and forth-grade highway 1100 km

Traffic accident Traffic accident data are managed by police department. They are mostly used in fault analysis Highway departments also have some accident data, most of which are accidents with highway loss. There are good records in freeway, but not good in other highways.
Difficulty:We cannot collect all of the accidents at any time. For example, some drivers drive their vehicles away in some single vehicle accidents with few loss. Now, the accident locations are usually a site, but in fact a segment. • Traffic accident
Traffic and traffic composition Traffic and traffic composition data are managed by highway department. Different level highways with different observation methods。 Traffic of national highways are observed by observation station. Provincial highways are observed by manpower.
Traffic and traffic composition Deficiency: Usually, about more than 25 kilometers have a traffic data along a highway. But for a highway with many crossings, the traffic is different between segments in 25 kilometers .
