  1. Science Chapter 8 Study Guide

  2. Thunder, lighting, wind, and rain occur in the Earth’s • atmosphere.

  3. People feel an ___when two plates jerk into a new position. • earthquake

  4. A ____is a constructive form on nature. • volcano

  5. You determine the streak of a mineral by • rubbing the mineral on a rough, hard, white surface.

  6. Igneous rock may turn into metamorphic rock when the igneous rock • experiences high pressure and heat.

  7. What type of rock is this? • metamorphic

  8. Farmers prevent ___of topsoil by surrounding fields with natural barriers, such as trees. • wind erosion

  9. _____ is the soil layer with the greatest amount of decayed material in it. • Topsoil

  10. Explain two ways that the movement of Earth’s plates changes the surface of Earth. This question is worth 20 points on the test!! • Two plates may collide with each other causing crust folds, tilts, and lifts to form mountains. Two plates also pull apart from each other and form a rift valley.

  11. Rocks are constantly being formed and destroyed. Describe the rock cycle including descriptions of how one type of rock can change to another type of rock. This question is worth 20 points on the test!! • The rock cycle is a slow process that changes rock types and takes millions of years. An igneous rock forms after a volcanic eruption. After thousands of years of being exposed to high temperatures and pressure the igneous rock turns into metamorphic rock. Gradually the metamorphic rock weathers into tiny bits of sediment. These sediment pieces are pressed together and eventually from sedimentary rock.
