Why Derry ? • English, French and Irish soldiers fought in Derry in 1689. • The Catholic King James hoped to gain Irish support to win back his throne. • James wanted to lure William over to Ireland and defeat him in battle. • Derry was a Protestant town and the gates were closed on the army of James.
What Happened During The Siege ? • The Siege lasted for 105 days. • Protestants inside the walls were called Williamites. • The Catholic army trying to break through the walls were called Jacobites. • There were many reasons why it lasted so long.

How Did The Siege End ? • A ship called the Mountjoy broke through the boom. • The ship carried supplies of beef, butter and brandy to the starving people. • The Jacobites decided to withdraw as starvation by siege had been their main hope. • James and Williamite fought the following year at the Boyne.
