TEACHING PSYCHOLOGY IN CYPRUS Anthi Loutsiou-Ladd,aloutsiou@ucy.ac.cy , Stelios Georgiou,stege@ucy.ac.cy Department of Psychology, School of Education and Social Sciences University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus http://www.ucy.ac.cy/goto/psychology/el-GR/HOME.aspx UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM:Bachelors of Arts in Psychology Duration: 240 ECT (10 ECTS Foreign Language) Compulsory Courses: 17 (101 ECTS) Theses: Optional Field Experience: 7 ECTS (Required) GRADUATE PROGRAMS: Master of Arts in School Psychology Duration: 3 years (180 ECTS) Supervised Internship: 1500 hours Aims: Preparation of Professional School Psychologists and for PhD Maste of Arts in Social and Developmental Psychology Master of Arts in Cognitive and Educational Psychology Duration: 2 years (60 ECTS) (Theses Required) Aims: Specialized knowledge, Preparation for research and for PhD DOCTORAL PROGRAMS:PhD in Clinical Psychology Duration: 320 ECTS (Dissertation Required) Supervised Internship: 1500 hours Aims: Preparation of Professional Clinical Psychologists and Researchers/Academics PhD in Psychology Duration: 240 ECTS (Dissertation Required) Aims: Preparation of Researchers/Academics CHALLENGES: Student funding, Student participation in departmental activities, Qualified field supervisors for practicums/internships, Manuals, Development of teaching skills among students, Competency review and remediation STRENGTHS: Emphasis on scientific psychology, Use of Blackboard technology in teaching, Bachelor’s level course in Vocational/Professional Issues, Limited Teaching and Research Assistantships, External research funding for students, Practicum sites outside national borders QUALITY ASSURANCE: All programs accredited by Cyprus Council for the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications.Programs informed by local legislation regarding the practice of psychology, EuroPsy, NASP, ISPA, APA EMPLOYMENT OF ALUMNI: Limited options for Bachelor’s level training, High social demand for qualified School and Clinical Psychologists, Multiple tertiary academic institutions hiring researchers in various areas. OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION WITH EUROPLAT: Short Practicums/Internships in School and Clinical Psychology outside national borders, Uniform guidelines for professional training.
