News from ELAN SC of CARE Paris April 2006 F. Richard LAL/Orsay
Outline • Workshops supported by ELAN in 2006 • The ELAN workshop in Orsay • Discussions in view of FP7 • A recurrent problem F. Richard LAL/Orsay
A few details • ILC LET workshop08 - 11 February chaired by K. Kubo (KEK) , P. Tenenbaum (SLAC) , D. Schulte (CERN): issues of the low emittance transport in the ILC from the damping ring to the interaction point and beyond • The ILC Global Design Effort Meeting 9-11 March 2006, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India preparation of RDR document with cost • POSIPOL: options and open issues of a polarized positron source based on laser Compton back scattering for ILC and CLIC, and R &D efforts towards a complete Compton source design. • High Gradient RF - HG2006 - CERN 25-27 Sept 2006, co-organized by LTECNC: limits on high fields in rf cavities and what causes breakdown and other phenomena that limit the ultimate gradients of these devices, such as surface pulsed heating. F. Richard LAL/Orsay
A workshop about the European XFEL will be held by EIFast at the DESY site in Hamburg on 9/10 May 2006 • EIFast: European Industry Forum for Accelerators with SCRF Technology • International Accelerator School for Linear Colliders19-27 May 2006 Sokendai, Hayama, Japan Organized by ILC GDE, ICFA Beam Dynamics Panel and the International Linear Collider Steering Committee F. Richard LAL/Orsay
Electron Accelerator R&D for the Energy Frontier • CARE/ELAN on May 15: - Plenary in the morning on laser/plasma, a proposal for a new infrastructure on SC, Progress in CLIC cavities, BDYN+INSTR… - FP7 1h30 discussion in the afternoon - 4 Parallel ELAN sessions for 3h30 • EUROLEAP kick-off meeting on May 16 • In // EUROTEV on May 16 • Reserved morning on Wednesday EUROLEAP F. Richard LAL/Orsay
Preparation of FP7 • First discussion within ESGARD February • Important discussions taking place at the CCSG in Berlin Zeuthen beginning of May -> ELAN meeting is timely on these issues • What are our goals after CARE+EUROTEV ? • What fits into a DS or into a JRA ? • Why do we need a European SC RF facility beyond TTF ? F. Richard LAL/Orsay
European SC RF Facility at CERN • LoI sent to the CERN-Council SG ON March 15 • Participation of ELAN (L. Lilje, F.R.) • Basic idea: TTF facility (SC technology) heavily used for XFEL and should be partially replaced by a new facility dedicated to R&D on SC • CERN, as a center of excellency for SC, could house such a facility • Needs support from the CERN-Council to be supported by ESFRI F. Richard LAL/Orsay
A recurrent problem for ELAN financing • The EU money arrives late in the year • This can be handled provided the national administration accepts to pay ELAN missions in the 1st part of the year (banking) • If not there is a very uncomfortable situation: - no money until June-July - overspending imposed on the rest of the year • What can be done ? F. Richard LAL/Orsay
Conclusions • Very active period on accelerator R&D • ELAN is a useful tool in: - Supporting workshops on a future linear colliders - Promoting new techniques for acceleration - Preparing for FP7 F. Richard LAL/Orsay
