  1. Taxonomy

  2. Carolus Linnaeus (1735) Bacteria? Before the concept of bacteria. (1860’s Louis Pasteur) • 2 Kingdoms: • Plants • Animals • Grouped according to structural similarities • Father of modern taxonomy (meaning: “to arrange”)

  3. Linnaean System Of Classification • species • one type of living thing with similar anatomicalcharacteristics • the ability to reproduce with one another and produce offspring that can also reproduce • genus – a group of species sharing major characteristics

  4. family – a group of similar genera (plural of genus) • – all families end in “-idae” for animals, and “-aceae” for plants • – family names are based on the name of a member in the genus • order – a group of similar families • class – a group of similar orders • phylum – a group of similar classes • kingdom - a group of similar phyla • There aresix kingdoms

  5. Classification for humans: • kingdom Animalia • phylum Chordata • class Mammalia • order Primates • family Hominidae • genus Homo • species sapiens DomainKingdomPhylumClassOrderFamilyGenusSpecies • (A sentence to help remember these taxa is --- “Donkey Kong Plays Chess On Family Guy Specials." )

  6. Binomial nomenclature • genus • written first • capitalized • species • follows genus • not capitalized • both are written in italics or underlined

  7. Tiger:Pantheratigris

  8. Dog: Canisfamiliaris

  9. Wolf: Canis lupus

  10. Taxonomy and Phylogeny • Phylogeny: The evolutionary relationships between groups of living things. • Taxonomy: The science of organizing living things into groups which reflect their natural, phylogenetic relationships. The groups are called taxa.

  11. Same Domain: Eukarya Same Kingdom: Animalia Same Phylum: Chordata (have a backbone) Class: Class: Class: Class: Class: Osteichthyes Mammalia Reptilia Aves Amphibia

  12. Which animals are the most closely related evolutionarily?

  13. Read 468-480 Q 1,5 pg 474, Q 2,3 pg 480 • Complete taxonomy worksheets
