But, what’s wrong with the dictionary? • Dictionary definitions don’t contain enough information to allow for complete understanding and ease of use. • The average student must already know a word in order to understand the dictionary definition. (Greenwood, 2002, p. 258) 1concept of definition word map Noun : a framework for organizing conceptual information in the process of defining a word which is organized in terms of three types of relationships: the general class or category in which the concept belongs, the attributes of properties of the concept and those that distinguish it from other members of the category, and examples or illustrations of the concept. (Vacca, Vacca, Mraz, 2010, p. 256) Whew! See what I mean about dictionary definitions?
