There are six centers in the Georgia AHEC Network, and each serves a multi-county region.  • The AHEC mission is to meet the health needs of Georgia by improving the supply, distribution and quality of healthcare providers. • AHECs offer enrichment programs, camps, learning tools, student counseling, volunteer and mentoring activity coordination, and access to other educational resources. • Contact your regional AHEC for more information.  AHEC

Pharmacist • Pharmacists dispense prescribed drugs, help consumers select over-the-counter medications, and prepare ointments, powders and capsules.  • Pharmacists partner with physicians to assist patients in managing chronic diseases such as diabetes.  They may educate and counsel patients on aspects of their disease or condition.

  8. PharmacistAcademic Requirements • All of Georgia's pharmacy schools require students to take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test prior to admission.  • A Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) requires six years of education:  two years of pre-pharmacy study and four years of the pharmacy program.  Students may select additional training in a specialty area.

Pharmacy Technician • Pharmacy technicians work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and perform many of the same duties as pharmacists, such as preparing and distributing medications and providing pharmaceutical care to patients.  • Other duties include compounding, preparing IVs and determining drug charges.

  12. Pharmacy TechnicianAcademic Requirements • A high school diploma or equivalent is required. • Many pharmacy technicians are trained on the job.  • Most training programs require 18 months to two years of study and lead to a certificate, diploma, or associate degree.
