The bumpiness or flatness of the land is called TOPOGRAPHY. The topography of the land determines how fast water will flow across it. The downhill flowing of water & melted ice & snow is what creates STREAMS AND RIVERS
A STREAM is water that is CONTINUALLY flowing DOWN a SLOPE. (a slanted surface like a hill or mountain). STREAMS *This is FAST-moving water Also called CREEKS Or BROOKS.
A RIVER is: where the water from several streams meet and flow together. RIVERS Wide, flat border areas around rivers where water spills out when rivers overflow are called FLOOD PLAINS Lots of vegetation grows around flood plains!
Streams & rivers carry and deposit SEDIMENT(pieces of rock and soil). SEDIMENT Rivers carry sediment DOWNSTREAMas they move toward larger bodies of water like gulfs, bays, or oceans. As the land flattens out, the speed of the water flowDECREASES & sediment is deposited.
