Context • Requirement for • CPU Servers: 3-5MCHF/year, 2006-8 • Disk servers: 3-5MCHF/year, 2006-8 • Dual-sourcing policy for this equipment well established • Equipment to be installed in two batches/year, “January” and “September” • FC approval required for orders above 750KCHF • No “derogation” for commodity equipment • whole purchase process takes ~36 weeks (best case) to ~48weeks (FC deadline missed) • compared to 21-24 weeks without FC approval
Approach • Target November FC for “January” installation and June FC for “September” installation • For January 2006, tender just issued; return deadlines of mid-July for CPU, mid-August for disks. • Currently, FI department view is that multiple orders can be issued for up to 750KCHF without FC approval • In principle, therefore, we can order up to 3MCHF per year for each equipment type. • January 2006 installations limited to 1.5MCHF each; review additional needs later. • Gain experience with wider range of suppliers then move to “blanket order” model • 3-4 approved suppliers; rapid price quotations with no testing of equipment prior to delivery.
Risks • Bad hardware batch • Dual sourcing limits likelihood and impact • FC approval (suddenly) required even for dual orders below 750KCHF • Always start procedure with time for FC adjudication in November or June (or even September & March) • Equipment delivered early • We are working hard to maximise the likelihood of this! • Impact is delayed introduction of new technology and higher overall cost
Tape Drives, Robotics and Media • Total tape equipment cost in 2006-8: 28MCHF • of which 40-50% for tape media • NO “2007 capable” drive now fully commercialised • STK & IBM both introducing new high-end drives • LTO3 now available, but LTO4 out before LHC startup • With FI department approval we • are negotiating now for test equipment in 2006, • will then negotiate costs for 2007-11 needs • Aim for FC approval of overall process in Sept/Nov • Risks: • Non-approval by FC of overall process • Cost for 2006 test systems • Mismatch between hardware capabilitie and computing models • Infrastructure to run drives at rated speed (>100MB/s); file sizes
